Isaac turns 16!

So I have been so busy, but Isaac turned 16 on September 29th regardless. Since Isaac is a lot of the reason I've been so busy this is going to be a long one.

First, Isaac is signed up for the Super 32 wrestling tournament in North Carolina on October 24th. We have been training for this since August. We have practice 2 nights a week, then in September we started a Super 32 camp that is on Saturdays and Sundays. The Super 32 is the largest preseason tournament in the US, it is a major event that kids from all over the country sign up for. Just to give you an idea they register almost 1300 kids. Last year the tournament filled up in 40 hours. This year it filled up in 35 minutes! Then they do a charity auction for an addtional 5 spots. The registration was $50, but in the auction people are actually paying $2000 for a spot for their child to wrestle! That is just going overboard, but the reason they do it is because if your child places at the tournament it is almost certain that you can get a scholarship. The tournament kind of acts like a scouting event for college coaches from all over.

Second, we decided to wait until Isaac turned 16 to get his permit. Well the first time he took the permit test he didn't pass. He was so upset. He didn't really study though. Everyone was telling him how easy it was so he thought he didn't need to study. After that we went back two weeks later and he passed with flying colors! Then he got to drive us home. He is a total white knuckle driver, but he's good. It hasn't been hard for me like I thought it would be. I think its because he is so nervous. The funny part is that he had to go by his legal name Isaac Ruiz so when he went to sign the papers he put Smith and then had to cross it out and put Ruiz. Then when he had to actually sign for his license signature he handwrote Isaac and then printed Ruiz. He never writes it like that so he wasn't comfortable handwriting it.

Third, we are studying for the SAT's. Can I just add that I never took the SAT's so this is totally stressful for me. I have no idea what I'm doing and I have the book with the answers! The school suggested we wait until the spring, but I say the more opportunities the better and I ordered the questions and answers that he misses so that he can better prepare for his second attempt.

Fourth, Isaac went to Homecoming with his new "girlfriend" Leigh. She is a sweet girl and her mom is really strict so I love that a lot. It's so funny though, the girls get super dressed up and the boys wear a nice shirt and jeans. Go figure. Isaac had a good time and even did the moonwalk at the dance. He can actually do a really good moonwalk, he must get that from Bambi. I was never able to pull off that move.

Well Isaac's birthday came and went. It was no frills, but good. The time has gone by so fast and I know these last 2 years he will be at home will go by even faster. I cherish all my time with him. I can still remember kindergarten and thinking I can't wait til he gets older. I wouldn't necessarily want to go back to those days, but I wished I wouldn't have been so caught up in so much of the little stuff during those years.

  1. Oh mija, it's great to hear how Isaac is doing. Elyssa is growing so much. It does feel like just yesterday they were little. When you said the part about Isaac writing Ruiz, I thought of your Dad. He took so much pride in Isaac -- he would be proud.

  3. Mija,

Time does fly by so quickly. Isaac likes the Ruiz thing. It's funny to hear him pronounce it. He's always trying to clarify his heritage, because no one believes that he is of mexican and native american decent; with his blue eyes and fair skin. But now he has the name. You can't dispute that.

I love to hear him speak spanish as well. Really cute. He is having a great time this year, and so ready for wrestling season to begin.
